HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
Two of the best back-to-back shots you will ever see
Jack Sock and Hunter Johnson are two of the most talented players on the PPA Tour. They play with equal parts precision and flare, and both of those traits were on display during this epic singles point.
Sock’s shot was nasty, but Johnson’s rebuttable was downright disgusting.

PICKLEBALLERS
Hurricane Tyra Black: The most vulnerable pickleball podcast ever
Tyra “Hurricane” Black grew up in the pressure cooker of junior tennis — sitting courtside in a stroller while her dad coached pros, traveling the world alone at 13, and being turned pro without even knowing it. The burnout, stress and antidepressants that followed nearly pushed her out of sports for good.
In this week’s episode of Pickleballers, Tyra joins cohosts Roscoe and Jared to talk about leaving tennis, how pickleball helped her find joy again, battling an autoimmune scare, MLP drama, protecting her Dallas Flash teammates, quitting singles after a PPA title and what she wants the sport to become. Raw, honest and insanely inspiring.

THE PROS
The Kitchen’s Top 20 men’s and women’s singles players
Last week we shared our updated list of the Top 20 men’s and women’s doubles players in the world, which we made with the help of an anonymous pro. This week we put our heads together and came up with a power ranking of the Top 20 men’s and women’s singles players.
Federico Staksrud: If we had done this ranking three months ago, Staksrud would not have been No. 1. But he finished the year strong, winning the Pickleball World Championships in Dallas, the Las Vegas Cup and the wooden paddle tournament in Sacramento. He now has the most gold medals of anybody this season with four, as well as three silvers and two bronze medals. Two of his wins were in Slams.
Christopher Haworth: He signed with the PPA late this summer, but has still managed to win two gold medals, one silver and one bronze in fewer events than any of the other players on our list.
Hunter Johnson: He started the year strong, with three golds in his first nine tournaments of the season, but hasn't found the top of the podium since June.
Anna Leigh Waters: It's not close at the top of women's singles. Waters has 11 gold medals and counting this season, and hasn't lost in more than 500 days.
Kate Fahey: Has established herself as the clear No. 2, making it to seven finals in 2025 -- she has two golds (in events that Waters didn't play), five silvers and four bronze medals.
Kaitlyn Christian: There was a time earlier this year when she was making a case for the No. 2 spot, but Fahey has separated late in the year.
TRENDING
The PPA Tour is back in action this week in Lakeland, Florida, for the Lakeland Open.
This event is being played as a modified traditional draw, which means singles (Wednesday), mixed doubles (Thursday) and gender doubles (Friday) will be played through the quarterfinal rounds on their designated days. Then the semifinal matches for all divisions will be Saturday, followed by Championship Sunday.
We saw some huge upsets on Wednesday, as No. 1 seed Federico Staksrud, No. 3 seed Connor Garnett and No. 6 seed Christopher Haworth were all knocked out of the tournament.
With Florida being home for many of the top players on the PPA Tour, the doubles draws are filled with all the top players, minus Hayden Patriquin on the men's side -- he's skipping this event.
PADDLE CORNER
First look at the new Proton Project Peacock
Less than a year after releasing its most popular paddle ever -- the Series Three - Project Flamingo -- Proton has officially launched a new model in the Series Three line: the Project Peacock.
They may have kept with the bird theme in naming the paddle, but there are several key differences in how the new Peacock paddle is constructed and how it performs on the court.
Proton developed a 100% foam core in the new paddle, giving it a much softer and more responsive feel without sacrificing top-end power. Proton says third-party testing has also shown that the foam core is more resistant to breakdown over time than traditional honeycomb cores and other similar paddles.
The elongated version of the Peacock is currently available at Dick's Sporting Goods and Scheels, and a widebody version will also be available soon. Both the elongated shape and widebody shape will come in 13mm and 15mm thickness options.
